  • 3 lb Russet potatoes - Peeled and cut into chunks
  • 6 tablespoon Butter - Room temperature
  • ¾ cup Whole milk - Or use buttermilk warm
  • 1 teaspoon Salt - Plus more for boiling water
  • ½ teaspoon Black pepper - Optional
Optional Add-ins:
  • ½ cup Sour cream - For extra creaminess
  • 2 oz Cream cheese - Room temperature
  • 2 teaspoon Garlic - Minced or roasted
  • 2 tablespoon Chives - Or green onions chopped

Equipment

  • 1 Large pot (Big enough to hold all the potatoes)
  • 1 Colander (For draining)
  • 1 Potato masher (Or ricer, for smooth texture)
  • 1 Mixing bowl (For final mixing (optional)
  • 1 Fine mesh strainer (Optional, for fluffiest texture)
  • 1 Sharp knife (For cutting potatoes into chunks)

Method
 

  1. Peel and cut potatoes into even chunks. Place in cold salted water in a large pot.

  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium. Simmer until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes.

  3. Drain potatoes well in a colander. Let them steam for 2–3 minutes to remove excess moisture.

  4. Return to pot. Mash potatoes. Add butter first, then slowly stir in warm milk or buttermilk.

  5. Season with salt and pepper. Adjust texture with more milk if needed. Serve hot.
